First milestone of this initiative was achieved on April 16, 2010. Professor Nathan Katz, a specialist in the religions of India and former chair of the Department of Religious Studies at FIU, was named the First Bhagwan Mahavir Professor. Dr Dipak Jain, Chair of the Jain Education and Research Foundation noted, "Today by starting this professorship, FIU has given us a platform and have allowed us to implant this seed and the Flowers are going to blossom for many years to come."
The President of FIU concluded by sharing that, "Jainism, one of the most hopeful religious and spiritual movement in the world today can be forever taught at our great university."
Specific objectives of this professorship are to
- Infuse university curriculum with courses in Jainism, relying on Jain scriptures, appropriate for undergraduate and graduate levels.
